For the last decades, Marimekko has had a solid spot in the top of the best known Finnish brands. What started with Printex, a small Helsinki-based textile printing company, in 1949, has nowadays become one of the most beloved Nordic design companies. Besides the iconic Marimekko fabrics, you can also find clothing, accessories, bags and all kinds of items for your home.
Jackie loved the Marimekko fabrics
Marimekko became instant famous in 1960, when Jackie Kennedy bought seven dresses and decided to wear one of them on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The sixties was also the decade when designer Maija Isola created a few of the iconic Marimekko prints; Lokki, Kaivo and of course Unikko. She designed the latter one in protest after Armi Ratia (the founder of the brand) had declared that Marimekko would never be a flower print company. Ironically, this rebel flower turned out to become the best-known Marimekko print of them all.
